St. Ishmaels, which is located on the northern shore of the Milford Haven Waterway, lies about five miles west of the town of Milford Haven and three miles east of Dale. It is also sited within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

The community council area has a population of about 479, St. Ishmaels 405. St. Ishmaels has an excellent community primary school, church, baptist chapel, garden centre, and a Sports Club . Coastlands CP School caters for pupils living in the Dale peninsula west of Herbrandston and has been extended to include an early years unit.

The shoreline is rocky with small coves, such as Monkhaven and is bounded by the larger pills or havens of Sandy Haven and Musselwick, with the popular Lindsway Beach located in between. The very attractive local scenery includes a varied coastline and countryside with a number of small woods and valleys. The Pembrokeshire coast path follows the cliff edge.

The large sports field and social club is used to host a number of activities and functions including school-related events. There are also pitches for football and cricket which are widely used.
