Eglwyswrw and District Community Council.

Welcome to Eglwyswrw, Meline, Crosswell and Brynberian districts, where the Welsh language is thriving not only among Welsh speakers but also among enthusiastic learners.

The Community Council catchment extends from the northern foothills of the Preseli, along the River Nevern towards the coast.

The Community Council consists of eight Councillors who are responsible for the 633 inhabitants of the Parish living in 299 homes. The parish is partly within The Pembrokeshire National Park.

The area is rich in historical sites with the iconic cromlech of Pentre Ifan, while the hill fort of Foel Drygarn (although outside the immediate parish) forms a distinctive backdrop. We also boast the striking Iron Age round house construction at Castell Henllys within our boundary. The ancient woodland of Pengelli and Panteg are within the vicinity - a paradise for walkers and those interested in nature. The foothills of the Preseli and the riversides also offer a variety of pathways.

Eglwyswrw Community (Primary) School is situated in the centre of the village. The present school was built in 1972 as an area school when the Old School Eglwyswrw, Llwynihirion and Whitechurch were closed. By now the catchment has included Glanrhyd, Llantood, Bridell and the Moylgrove areas.

The school was extended in 2005 with the benefit of a large hall and a sheltered activity and play area. Beyond the building are the playing fields situated in a pleasant environment and enjoying a fine view of the Preseli hills.

The school offers an education of a high standard for pupils from 4 to 11. The Secondary Schools provide education at Ysgol Y Preseli, Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi and Ysgol Beo Gwaun.

In close proximity of the Primary School is Yr Hen Ysgol - a busy and succesful centre (established as a Community Centre in 1998) This is the home of the Community Council, Yr Ysgol Feithrin, Cylch Ti a Fi, Women's Institute certain meetings of the Eglwyswrw Heritage Society and the various Village Committees.

Llwynihirion School was closed in 1972 - the building was purchased by the local community in 1981 and was established as Brynberian Community Centre - a busy venue. It is the home of the highly appraised Brynberian Eisteddfod and the annual Produce show amongst many other activities.

Crosswell Village Hall stands on the by-road leading to Crymych. the Hall was built during the mid 50's by local volunteers. It has been renovated many times over the years and is the home of Merched y Wawr and Cwmni'r Drama'r Mochyn Du among other community activities.

Eglwyswrw Church Hall is the venue of The Eglwyswrw Young Farmer's Club - a well established and successful club which provides a wide range of experiances for young people (11-26) and has played a pivotal role in the area, both culturally and sociably.

Th e Church of St.Cristiolus stands on a mound in the centre of the village. One of its attributes is a striking rose window with intricate patterns in stained glass. A bilingual service is held on the first Sunday of each month.

During August (2014) a special occasion took place at the church precinct - a Memorial Service and Dedication to honour the servicemen who lost their lives during the two World Wars. the service in the church was led by the Chancellor Canon Gerwyn Morgan and the Memorial was unveiled by Mr. Steven John of West Wales Memorial Project. The project was funded by The Eglwyswrw Heritage Society who are very grateful to Malcolm Gray of "Glasfryn Engravings"' St. David's for his accompolished design and execution.

The Memorial bears witness to the locality's gratitude and sympathy to the fallen and their families.

Meline Church is situated on a by-road between Eglwyswrw and Felindre Farchog. Services are held there during the first Sunday of every month.

The are two Welsh Baptist Chapels within the locality - Bethabara in the hamlet of Pontyglasier and Ebenezer in the direction of Rhoshill. Brynberian Indepenent Chapel is situated in the centre of the village while on the banks of the River Nevern below is Pontcynon a branch of the mother church.

The Community Council is represented by 8 elected councillors and a clerk. This council is responsible for the lower level of goverment and is the nearest to the people. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month (except during August) and are open to the puplic.
